Wrath Of The Titans Trailer Rages Online
Feel! The! Wrath!Sweet dreams are made of this. Who are we to disagree? Not quite two years ago, the Clash Of The Titans remake opened to colossal box office, and immediately became a notorious watchword in how to cock up a 3D post-conversion and thoroughly annoy an audience. But now here's a spanking new trailer for sequel Wrath Of The Titans, and it looks as if all might potentially be forgiven.Same territory as before, of course. Major battles with a host of CGI beasts in the offing, but, on first inspection, the design work this time doesn't look quite so much as if it's come about by having someone crane over Guillermo Del Toro's shoulder to look at his sketchbook. Jonathan Liebesman (Battle: LA) is the director, taking over from Louis Leterrier, and it does look as if he's delivered the grittier take on the material he promised a few months ago.Oh, and there are actually titans in this one. The plot takes place ten years after Clash, and sees a mullet-haired Perseus, retired on his Kraken-killer pension, trying to stay anonymous as a fisherman, until Kronos busts his wrathful troops out of Tartatarus to remonstrate with Zeus, Hades and Poseidon (Liam Neeson, Ralph Fiennes and Danny Huston). They're his sons and they imprisoned him. Families eh?Cue a Perseus-led quest to the underworld to rescue Zeus and stop the world becoming a blasted cinder, whereupon we will encouter cyclops, minotaur, shifting architecture and big explosions. It's all cut to Marilyn Manson's Eurythmics cover in the trailer, but we couldn't help wishing it was The Fight Song.Wrath Of The Titans also stars Edgar Ramirez as war god Ares, and Rosamund Pike as Andromeda, along with Toby Kebbell as Argenor and Bill Nighy as Hephaestus. In many ways it's had its thunder stolen by Tarsem's Immortals. We'll be able to see how Wrath measures up when it's released on March 30.

Questionable Vanity Fair Author Christopher Hitchens Dies at 62
Christopher Hitchens Questionable author Christopher Hitchens, whose works condemned religion in addition to such politicians as Mother Teresa and Henry Kissinger, has died, based on the Vanity Fair. He was 62. Hitchens, who had been a adding editor towards the magazine for pretty much 2 decades, died of pneumonia in the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston following a lengthy fight with esophageal cancer. Begin to see the stars we lost this season "Christopher Hitchens would be a wit, a charmer, along with a troublemaker, and also to individuals who understood him well, he would be a gift from, dare I only say it, God," Vanity Fair editor Graydon Carter authored. "You would be hard-pressed to locate a author who could match the amount of exquisitely crafted posts, essays, articles, and books he created in the last 40 years.Inch Born in Portsmouth, England, Hitchens analyzed at Oxford before writing for that left-wing magazine The Brand New Statesman. He eventually gone to live in the U.S. as well as in the the nineteen nineties started showing up on cable tv where he notoriously belittled then-leader Bill Clinton. In 1992, he became a member of Vanity Fair, where he authored questionable essays about such high-profile people as Michael Moore, Mel Gibson, George W. Rose bush and Mother Teresa. Inside a 2004 piece for Slate about Moore's documentary Fahrenheit 9/11, Hitchens authored, "Fahrenheit 9/11 is really a sinister exercise in moral frivolity, crudely disguised being an exercise in importance. It's also a spectacle of abject political cowardice hiding itself like a illustration showing 'dissenting' bravery." Financing Hollywood: A Better Way For Studios To Pay For Films
Joe Simon, the legendary comic artist who created Captain America with his partner Jack Kirby, died Thursday at age 98 according to a Facebook post from his son. Marvel Comics confirmed his death, according to the website Comic Book Resources.our editor recommends'Avengers' 101: Trailer School'Captain America' Surprisingly Loved by the World PHOTOS: 'The Avengers': Comics vs. Film Simon is best known for Captain America, which he created with Jack Kirby for Timely Comics (the predecessor of Marvel Comics) in March 1941, a few months before the Pearl Harbor attack and America's entry into World War II. The cover of Captain America #1 famously displayed the hero punching Adolf Hitler in the jaw. Captain America was an instant hit with the first issue selling nearly a million copies. During World War II, Captain America was the one hero who rivaled Superman in popularity with American forces abroad. Simon and Kirby soon jumped to National Comics, the forerunner of DC Comics, in a pay dispute. At National, the pair worked on Sandman, the Boy Commandoes, and the Newsboy Legion. They also wrote and illustrated Captain Marvel Adventures #1, the first comic devoted to the boy who says "Shazam" to become a hero, for Fawcett Comics. PHOTOS: 'The Avengers': New Photos From Marvel's Superhero Film After serving in the Coast Guard during World War II, Simon returned to comics, producing horror and romance comics with Kirby as interest in superheroes waned after the war. In 1960, Simon founded the MAD magazine competitor Sick, and in 1966 he became the editorial director of Harvey Comics, where he launched the company's superhero line and again worked with Kirby. The last time Kirby and Simon teamed up was for a six-issue run of Sandman in 1974. The partnership between Simon and Kirby was as close -- if not closer -- than one between Kirby and Stan Lee at Marvel Comics. In a July 2011 interview to celebrate the release of his memoir, Simon said, "Jack was one-of-a-kind -- I knew that even before Al Harvey introduced us. As soon as we started working together, he and I were determined that when we worked together on a story, you wouldn't be able to see where one of us left off and the other started. We worked so closely together that, after the war, we moved into the same town on Long Island. That way, all we had to do was cross the street to get to the other's studio. PHOTOS: Hollywood's Notable Deaths "It wasn't until the late 1950s, after Mainline, that we started working on separate projects, but even then, we collaborated on features like The Fly and Private Strong. When Jack moved to California, we talked a lot on the phone. First, I would talk business with Roz, then she would hand me over to Jack so we could reminisce. We were friends until he passed away, and I still miss him." Simon became a champion of creator rights, suing Marvel over the rights to Captain America and retaining the copyrights for many of his other characters. He was beloved by a later generation of comic book artists like Rob Liefeld who said, "Joe Simon in his late 80′s was savvier than most of us in our 40′s. Generous and enthusiastic until the end!" PHOTOS: Comic-Book Characters in Dispute Joe Simon was born Hymie Simon in Rochester, NY in 1913. During his early twenties, he worked as an editorial cartoonist for newspapers before settling in NY City in the late 1930s, where he met Kirby when both were trying to break into the comics industry. In addition to his work in comics, Simon worked in advertising, notably as art director for Burstein, Phillips, and Newman from 1964 to 1967. Still, Simon would always be best known for his early work on Captain America. UPDATE: DC has released statements from co-publsihers Dan DiDio and Jim Lee on Simon's passing. Didio: "Joe Simon was a true legend in the comic book industry. So much of what we are today is owed to him and his amazing creativity. In addition to one of the great writers of the Golden Age, he was also an editor at DC Comics. We appreciate all of his contributions to DC Comics and the industry as a whole, both on the page and behind the scenes." Lee: "We lost another of the Titans this week. A creative virtuoso, Joe Simon will be best known for co-creating Captain America with legendary artist Jack Kirby but his many contributions to DC Comics, both as a writer and an editor, are legion and will continue to be cherished by longtime fans, this one included. Our sympathies go out to his family, friends and many, many fans." PHOTO GALLERY: View Gallery Comic-Book Characters In Dispute Captain America

Liveblogging Six New Chipmunks: Chip-Wrecked Clips...So You Don't Have To!
To be fair, there was never any possibility of me seeing Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked in theaters…however there was a possibility that I might opt to half-watch a complimentary in-flight screening of the threequel if the airborne opportunity ever arose. To determine whether there might be any reward to this risk, I bravely watched six new clips from the upcoming comedy and logged my observations. Hopefully you’ll find them helpful when determining whether to see Fox’s furry CGI trio get Chipwrecked yourself. 0:03 - This appears to be the worst Carnival Cruise commercial ever. 0:15 - Listening to five seconds-worth of helium-affected Chipmunk singing is the cruelest imaginable punishment. The CIA should look into the use of these clips for torture against immobilized captives. Terrorists will be screaming for the waterboarding alternative after hearing the Chipettes cover the Go-Gos. 0:30 - Do you think that in the ’90s, while on the set of a Sonic Youth music video, Jason Lee ever imagined that one day he would have to discipline CGI chipmunks while wearing white pants and boat shoes? 0:33 - Alvin makes his grand entrance by sliding down a rope harboring the cruise ship they are about to board. That’s all. 0:40 - Breaking: Chipmunks need passports to travel. Do not book an international vacation with your chipmunk family unless you have the proper government documentation. 0:41 - This is a Carnival Cruise commercial. Take note of the Carnival tent stationed directly behind David as he tells Alvin (with a straight face) that he is “too young for parasailing.” 0:05 - Surprising news: I am not turned off entirely by this clip. Simon (at least I think it’s Simon) appears to give Dave some advice concerning Alvin while helping him get dressed. Maybe I judged Chipwrecked too soon based on the main characters’ irritating singing voices, abundance of energy and the film’s blatant cruise line advertising. That was not entirely fair. It would be great to have a wise, rodent-sized friend who could help me get ready for Carnival cruise black tie events. 0:59 - Dammit, Alvin. As soon as Dave heeds Simon’s advice and loosens the reigns on his rat-sized friends, Alvin whips off his red shirt to reveal a Bond-style dinner coat and a plan. “I’m feeling lucky,” exclaims Alvin, “And Dave said that we are old enough to make our own decisions.” 1:00 - Theodore, the pear-shaped member of the titular trio, plops down on an easy chair with the remote control, revealing that he is my spirit chipmunk. 0:05 - The Chipmunks and Chipettes are off the Carnival cruise ship and appear to be [don’t make me say it] chipwrecked on an island. 0:10 - Jenny Slate appears and the CGI rats scream, “Please don’t eat us, Mr. Jungle Monster,” after flinging a mango at her forehead. This is not the way to treat your most promising co-star. 0:25 - For a second, a disoriented Jenny Slate, also stranded on this island, lunges towards the chipmunks and I get excited, thinking this could take a turn into Lord of the Flies territory with Alvin’s head ending up on a stick. Instead, she just can’t believe that squirrels can talk and needs a closer look. 0:36 - When Slate confesses that she doesn’t know who these high-pitched hooligans are, they offer her a choreographed “Bad Romance” number. Each second that they cover the hit, I see Lady Gaga’s bank account growing in direct correlation with my annoyance. 0:59 - Upon hearing that Slate has been chipwrecked for “8 or 9 years,” the Chipettes worry that they will be trapped “forever.” I am unsurprisingly fine with this as long as the public isn’t subjected to any more sequels of their adventures.

Chuck Lorre Nearly Quit 'Two and Half Men' Because Of Charlie Sheen
A controversial new documentary exploring the path of the corpse of Italian fascist dictator Benito Mussolini is attracting criticisms from the Italy's press for some of the gruesome images it portrays while forcing Italians to examine the country's fascination with the strong-armed leader. Unlike Hilter in Germany or Franco in Spain, Italy has never completely come to terms with Mussolini, who remains an esteemed and iconic figure to many. PHOTOS: 12 of Hollywood's Most Mysterious Deaths The documentary, Il Corpo del Duce (The Duce's Body), examines some aspects of the country's fixation with Mussolini in part by following the path of Mussolini's corpse from when he was captured and killed by a partisan mob as he tried to flee to Switzerland. The film chronicles the corpse form the lamppost where his body hung by its feet in Milan to an anonymous grave and then to a refrigerated police warehouse. The path ends at a tomb near his birthplace in northern Italy, which still draws tens of thousands of visitors each year. Il Corpo del Duce premiered at the Turin Film Festival last month. The film, which features many never-before-seen images of the man known to Italians as "Il Duce," is directed by Roman director Fabrizio Laurentini, who is no stranger to Mussolini: six years ago, he directed Il Segrety di Mussolini (Mussolini's Secret), a documentary that focuses on the life of Isa Dalser, who historians say may have been Mussolini's first wife. STORY: Universal, Tom Hanks Travel to Hitler's Berlin for 'In the Garden of Beasts' Many of the images in the film are strong, including shots that focus on Mussolini's morbidly swollen face taken days after he was hung upside down, stoned, and shot, and others that show his bullet-ridden corpse curled up and stiff after ten years in a crate in the police warehouse where it was placed after supporters dug him up from his anonymous gravesite outside Milan. Laurentini is best known for his work in the horror genre, and in Il Corpo del Duce it shows: he has drawn criticism from the left for showing Mussolini's brutal treatment by anti-fascists, and from the right for his disrespectful treatment of Mussolini. "The Duce's Body: Mussolini becomes a horror film," the center-left newspaper La Repubblica reported. "Shock becomes the main attraction," a cinema blog stated. The financial daily Il Sole/24 Ore said, "The Duce's Body Still Lives." Consumer groups have called for the DVD of the film to carry a warning label to alert possible purchasers about its horrifying contents. The documentary is based on a book by Sergio Luzzato and will be broadcast by state television company RAI next year. Titanic 3-D Gets Postered, and 5 Other Stories You'll Be Talking About Today
Happy Wednesday! Also in this edition of The Broadsheet: Kristen Stewart rumored for Akira… The Expendables 2 upsets the Bulgarian bat population… Ron Meyer tries a little tenderness… There is a Dutch version of Jersey Shore… and more. · James Cameron’s revival of Titanic now has a poster. Taking a step away from the romantic, close-up clinch of the 1997 one-sheet, this one instead suspensefully plays up stars Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet behind a screen of flying sperm that will no doubt rock theatergoers next year in 3-D. (Click image for larger poster.) [THR] · Because the whitening of Hollywood’s forthcoming Akira adaptation wasn’t already infuriating enough to fanboys, now Warner Bros. has reportedly offered Kristen Stewart the role of Ky Reed in its franchise hopeful. [THR] · Only in Bulgaria would the incursion into a bat habitat be an actionable offense, but there you have it: Producers for The Expendables 2 will have to pay a fine for removing protected shrubs and tress from the entrance of the renowned Devetashka Cave. Favorite bit: “To avoid disturbing the bats, the producers have promised to refrain from explosions, car chases and fires in close proximity to the cave.” Stuntmen, however… [Deadline] · Universal chief Ron Meyer tried a different, less bracingly candid tack on Tuesday in an internal memo sharing his strategy for the studio’s 100th anniversary in 2012: “Throughout Universal’s hundred years, we’ve created films that have touched the hearts of millions, and fostered our culture’s love affair with cinema. Some films have been more successful than others, but all of them have a place in our history.” Even The Wolfman! [Deadline] · Ever get confused about the difference between the words “pixilated” and “pixelated”? No longer! [The Awl] · And now, a glimpse at the Dutch equivalent of Jersey Shore, cheerfully entitled Oh Oh Cherso and quite possibly the biggest blight on Dutch culture since that radical who cut Theo Van Gogh’s throat. My people must not stand for this! Also: Is it any coincidence it takes place in The Hague? [The Lost Boy]

L.A. film and TV shoots drop for week
Offlot feature and TV filming has remained chilly in Los Angeles, with total permitted production last week falling 24% below the same period last year. Feature activity totalled 89 days, 49 days lower than the 2010 frame -- though the week came in far above the 65 days of the previous week, which was the lowest total of 2011. The 2011 highs came in June with 246 days and 229 days during the last two weeks of that month. CBS Films' comedy "Seven Psychopaths," starring Sam Rockwell, Colin Farrell and Christopher Walken, was the most active feature with 10 permitted days, according to figures provided Tuesday by the FilmL.A. permitting agency. Other films shooting in Los Angeles include Warner Bros.' period drama "Gangster Squad," starring Sean Penn and Ryan Gosling, "A Glimpse Inside the Mind of Charles Swan III," "Here Comes the Night," "Street Eyes" and "Safe House." TV shooting declined 37% to 341 days, with Fox TV the most active producer with 25 days and "Raising Hope" the most active single production with seven days. Other TV productions currently shooting in L.A. include "Justified," "Parenthood," "Desperate Housewives," "Glee," "Franklin & Bash," "The Voice," "X Factor" and "Little People, Big World."
Third quarter location filming in Los Angeles was up 15% over the same quarter a year ago but has lagged in recent weeks. FilmL.A. spokesman Todd Lindgren said that over the last four weeks, declines have come in permits, locations and production days. "The ratio of locations per TV permit over the four-week period declined from 2.42 last year to 2.23 this year, and the ratio of days per location last year was 2.06 vs. 1.90 this year," he explained. "After some research into the drop in TV numbers, it appears TV shows are shooting fewer days on-location than last year. Where a show may have been out four days per episode last year, this year we're seeing three or two days instead." Commercial shooting shot up 49% to 167 days with a Search Engine spot and an NHL ad racking up the most days at 10 each. Contact Dave McNary at dave.mcnary@variety.com

New Dragon Tattoo Poster Comes Forth
What is hidden in snow...There are all kinds of viral online shenanigans going on in the lead up to the release of David Fincher's The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo. The latest reveal comes from the "unofficial" Mouth Taped Shut website, and it's the final version of a poster teased a couple of weeks ago."There's a Swedish proverb: 'What is hidden in snow comes forth in the thaw'," Fincher told Empire in issue 269. "We'll probably use it on a poster." Here it is:Not quite as in-your-face as previous, notorious, nipple-exposing banners then. Rather than LIsbeth Salander's goth aggression, this one evokes the atmosphere of icey chill that score-composer Trent Reznor says has been central to the production. The thick black frame and the flower are also a nod to the annual gifts Henrik Vanger receives from an unknown sender. There's currently a game afoot where you can decipher fiendish clues to find similar Fincher-signed items in American cities.Daniel Craig, Rooney Mara, Robin Wright, Stellan Skarsgard, Christopher Plummer and Joely Richardson star in The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo. Steve Zaillian wrote the screenplay, and it's out on December 26. Fincher is currently "negotiating" with Sony for a three-hour cut.

Melissa Etheridge Talks 'Glee,' Obama
It is a classic Hollywood tale: Wide-eyed 21-year-old steps from the bus from Kansas with hopes for rock fame, hit records, honours and perhaps introducing among her idols. Melissa Etheridge accomplished everything and much more -- she duetted using the Boss, to begin with, and won two Grammys as well as an Oscar. Nonetheless, because the 50-year-old singer is acknowledged for her accomplishments having a star around the Hollywood Walk of Fame, she strongly recalls her place throughout the boulevard's seedier days, telling "THR:" "Whenever you develop within the Area, this is actually the Land of Oz. It is the dream I purchased it hook, line and sinker."THR: You've accomplished a lot in music -- Grammys, multiple Top Ten hits, an Oscar for that song "I have to AwakenInch from "An Bothersome Truth." Which moment sticks out? Melissa Etheridge: Singing "Thunder Road" with Bruce Springsteen [on MTV in 1995]. I had been very proud. It had been among individuals markers, such as the brass ring. Getting just emerge from singing at Woodstock '94 for 300,000 people, it had been amazing.THR:Many recall your 2005 Grammy performance. You'd gone through chemotherapy while fighting cancer of the breast and lost hair. What had you been convinced that evening? Etheridge:I had not been from the house for 3 several weeks, therefore it was a little of the shock but an extremely personal evening. I had been inside a private meditation, like: "OK, Melissa, display to the world that cancer did not kill you, that you are not suffering. And operate and sing among the finest tunes ever ["Bit of My Heart"], by among the finest artists, Janis Joplin." I had not prepared myself a lot for that bald factor -- I did not consider the social part it performed. But years later, not really a week passes when someone does not let me know just how much the performance designed to them.THR:Was there anything profound stated backstage? Etheridge:I recall finding yourself in the rear hallway and hearing someone yell, "Move aside, everybody!" because J.Lo and Marc Anthony were walking by. I needed to line facing the wall. I figured, "Such a funky job I've within this crazy world." It had been a stark contrast towards the spiritual awakening I had been getting at that time. Probably the most profound factor was throughout dress testing when Kris Kristofferson walked onstage weeping and held me for, like, three minutes.THR:With Top 40 skewing so urban and dance-affected recently, where would you call at your role in music today? Etheridge:I am writing for my next album now, and that i have completely forget about ever fitting in to the pop world. My job would be to create music of my soul. I don't have to play the overall game any longer.THR:Are you currently keen on "Glee"? Etheridge:It's clever and totally implies that the planet loves gay entertainment. Without us, an amount you laugh at? Although I needed to visit the Glee concert with my daughter -- my dear God, shoot me. But it is an equation which has been around forever: kids singing tunes we all know, large lights, dancing and screaming women. They have been doing the work since Frank Sinatra.THR:You arrived on the scene 18 years back. If "Glee" have been around whenever you were a teen, wouldn't it have transformed your existence? Etheridge:Yes! I see my daughter's experience of senior high school. She and her buddies really discuss [their sexuality]. Giving youthful people careful analysis label yourself now or otherwise, praising anything that you're -- generation x will shame us.THR:Your tunes happen to be carried out on "The American Idol Show.Inch What organization of all of the TV singing shows today? Etheridge:It's just like a spectator sport. Everybody wants to evaluate this is an intrinsic a part of society and human instinct. I am not surprised that talent shows are hits, but I am glad a number of them aren't so brutal. THR:You had been a vocal supporter of Barack Obama's presidential bid in 2008, proclaiming in an L.A. concert that you simply "felt change coming." How's it going feeling about things now? Etheridge:In hindsight, it'll most likely be my last political endorsement of the Republican or Democrat. Not because he's disappointed me but because I now see very clearly they all response to exactly the same boss: large business -- the multinational companies that completely run our country. They are likely to nitpick as our nation gradually becomes fascism. I am not extending its love to pretend any longer. I supported Obama for social issues. In my opinion he introduced our nation together and cured our racial divide. Martin Luther King's dream came true when he was chosen. That's huge. However the division is not employed by me any longer.THR:The Walk of Fame star means you've created a permanent mark about this town. How can you experience the recognition? Etheridge:It is the strangest factor. I had been that girl in 1982 that walked along Hollywood Boulevard prior to being a tourist attraction, if this was crack sellers chilling out. I'd say, "This is actually the town where, whenever you allow it to be, installed your title in stone." If there is the zombie apocalypse, my title would survive. It is extremely mythic and legendary.WALK OF FAMEWhen: 11 a.m., Tuesday, Sept. 27Where: 6901 Hollywood Blvd. while watching Hard RockGuest speaker: Hamish Dodds of Hard Rock Worldwide The Hollywood Reporter

The Eugene Mirman 'Fake' Comedy Fest Is Real
The Eugene Mirman 'Fake' Comedy Fest Is Real By Daniel Lehman September 13, 2011 Eugene Mirman The Eugene Mirman Comedy Festival is really a joke.A minimum of, that's the way the annual event started 4 years ago, when Brooklyn-based standup comedian Eugene Mirman told fellow comics Mike Birbiglia and Julie Cruz that it might be funny to title a comedy festival after themself because "it might be a absurd factor to complete.InchHowever Cruz required him seriously enough that they employed Caroline Creaghead, her intern in the Onion, to assist them to make it. Together they released the very first Eugene Mirman Comedy Festival in 2008.Creaghead had no training creating or marketing comedy occasions, but she soon learned that having a title like Eugene Mirman, entertainers would fall into line to sign up. "He offers an very warm vibe," Creaghead states of Mirman, "the ones would like to be around him, getting fun. And that is what he loves, is simply people getting a great time. It's much more about the knowledge that other individuals are getting. Which has been an enchanting factor concerning the festivalit's much like inviting individuals to an event.InchNumerous of alternative comedy's symbols or more-and-comers, for example Kristen Schaal, David Mix, Todd Craig, John Hodgman, Michael Showalter, Hannibal Buress, Janeane Garofalo, John Oliver, Jon Benjamin, and Reggie W, have since adopted residency at two Brooklyn venues, The Bell House and Union Hall, every year for any weekend in September. This season the selection will even include John Mulaney, Kurt Braunohler, Tom Shillue, Jen Kirkman, Marc Maron, and a lot more.Mirman and the cohorts understand and appreciate the initial symbiotic relationship between comics along with a live audience. Rather than concentrating on becoming another exclusive setting for industry VIPs to uncover and evaluate talent, the Mirman Festival is definitely an inclusive event that merely seeks to entertain, by whatever means necessary. Mirman's silly, absurdist, and almost childlike spontaneity is apparent throughout each year's programming, assisted through the periodic sideshow spectacle, like a dunk tank, a cotton chocolate machine, or perhaps a cookout."I usually thought it was simpler to begin my very own show than attempt to break right into a club," Mirman states. "If try on some your personal show and publicize it the ones come, then you are still a comic book. Our audiences are frequently very friendly. They will not laugh if something's not funny, but they'll be also patient. And thus consequently, it's just really fun."Some highlights from the 2011 Eugene Mirman Comedy Festival include "A Night Time of Science," a dent-evening event by which astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson, the director from the American Museum of Natural History's Hayden Planetarium and frequent "Daily Show" guest, will host a chapter of his radio show "StarTalk" with the aid of Mirman, Schaal, along with other comics "The Archer Variety Hour and Panel," featuring the cast and designers from the Forex animated series "Archer" and "The Talent Show Presents: The Drunk Show," throughout which entertainers including Hodgman, Kirkman, and "This American Existence" host Ira Glass will base an improv comedy show around consuming games because they are instructed to get drunk before the crowd.InchEugene continues to be really encouraging in our show right from the start,Inch states Elna Baker, who co-hosts the monthly designed "Talent Show" with Kevin Townley at Littlefield in Brooklyn. "While he loved the show, he requested us to complete what we should already do included in the comedy festival. We have made him perform some pretty absurd things, and he's been a great sport about this.InchTo carry on to grow the fest's choices without raising ticket prices, Mirman, Creaghead, and Cruz released a fundraiser campaign on Kickstarter that elevated a lot more than $18,000 this summer time. Donations from nearly 250 fans, together with bigger contributions from supporters Comedy Central and Sub Pop Records, managed to get possible to create to existence what Mirman calls "demented dreams," like a petting zoo as well as an "awkward party bus." The Eugene Mirman 'Fake' Comedy Fest Is Real By Daniel Lehman September 13, 2011 Eugene Mirman The Eugene Mirman Comedy Festival is really a joke.A minimum of, that's the way the annual event started 4 years ago, when Brooklyn-based standup comedian Eugene Mirman told fellow comics Mike Birbiglia and Julie Cruz that it might be funny to title a comedy festival after themself because "it might be a absurd factor to complete.InchHowever Cruz required him seriously enough that they employed Caroline Creaghead, her intern in the Onion, to assist them to make it. It's much more about the knowledge that others are getting. This season the selection will even include John Mulaney, Kurt Braunohler, Tom Shillue, Jen Kirkman, Marc Maron, and much more.Mirman and the cohorts understand and appreciate the initial symbiotic relationship between comics along with a live audience. Rather than concentrating on becoming another exclusive setting for industry VIPs to uncover and evaluate talent, the Mirman Festival is definitely an inclusive event that merely seeks to entertain, by whatever means necessary. Mirman's silly, absurdist, and almost childlike spontaneity is apparent throughout each year's programming, assisted through the periodic sideshow spectacle, like a dunk tank, a cotton chocolate machine, or perhaps a cookout."I usually thought it was simpler to begin my very own show than attempt to enter a golf club,Inch Mirman states. "If try on some your personal show and publicize it the ones come, then you are still a comic book. Our audiences are frequently very friendly. They will not laugh if something's not funny, but they'll be also patient. And thus consequently, it is simply really fun."Some highlights from the 2011 Eugene Mirman Comedy Festival include "A Night Time of Science," a dent-evening event by which astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson, the director from the American Museum of Natural History's Hayden Planetarium and frequent "Daily Show" guest, will host a chapter of his radio show "StarTalk" with the aid of Mirman, Schaal, along with other comics "The Archer Variety Hour and Panel," featuring the cast and designers from the Forex animated series "Archer" and "The Talent Show Presents: The Drunk Show," throughout which entertainers including Hodgman, Kirkman, and "This American Existence" host Ira Glass will base an improv comedy show around consuming games because they are instructed to get drunk while watching audience."Eugene continues to be really encouraging in our show right from the start,Inch states Elna Baker, who co-hosts the monthly designed "Talent Show" with Kevin Townley at Littlefield in Brooklyn. Donations from nearly 250 fans, together with bigger contributions from supporters Comedy Central and Sub Pop Records, managed to get possible to create to existence what Mirman calls "demented dreams," just like a petting zoo as well as an "awkward party bus." "You will find there's fantasy of creating an frozen treats truck limousine," Mirman states, "however i believe that maybe is not possible.""We wanted to get a complete-page ad in Variety to congratulate ourselves about the festival," Creaghead states, "to poker fun at that trope of the profession congratulating themselves, or I suppose their customers. Robopocalypse Gets A Release Date
Spielberg's 'bot buster lands in 2013As excited as moviegoers should be about War Horse and Tintin, the prospect of Steven Spielberg's next project, sci-fi actioner Robopocalypse, should already have you breaking out your best robot dance. As of today, it's got a worldwide release date - July 3, 2013 - the first day of the Independence Day holiday in the US. Yup, this is the place blockbusters go to blow ginormous things up. Even Spielberg's Belgian boy wonder may have to bow before the global maelstrom the director is likely to unleash on us in his next project. Funding his adaptation of Daniel H. Wilson's page-turner are 20th Century Fox and the Spielberg-founded DreamWorks Pictures. Says Spielberg in a joint announcement by the two studios: "I am so pleased that (20th Century Fox joint-CEOs) Tom Rothman and Jim Gianopulos see the same exciting opportunities in Robopocalypse that we originally saw when we bought the rights to the book. We had a successful relationship with them and Fox when we made Minority Report and we hope we can deliver another film that will give today's global audiences something thrilling. " . Like Robot Wars infected by the Y2K virus, Robopocalypse sees mankind's reliance on automation rebound horrifically when robots become self-aware and rise up against their owners. It's big, bad and bloody, and if there's a story more tailor-made for Spielberg's touch than this, we've not read it. Watch X-Men: First Class

Toronto 2011 Critic's Preview: Why the Festival Matters
The very first movie to possess its world premiere in a film festival and go onto win the very best picture Academy Award was Woodsy Allen's Annie Hall, which first showed at La' Filmex in spring 1977. 4 years later, Chariots of Fire released competing at Cannes and originated from behind to snare the Oscar. The Final Emperor started its lengthy march to honours glory in the 1987 Tokyo, japan Film Festival, as well as in 2000, American Beauty, revealed at Toronto in 1999, drawn from the trick.our editor recommendsToronto 2011: 10 Hot Game titles Purchasers Dare Not MissToronto 2011: Purchasers to determine First Footage of Ryan Gosling and Bradley Cooper's 'The Place Past the Pines' Carnage: Venice Film ReviewThe Descendants: Telluride Film ReviewA Harmful Method: Venice Film ReviewRelated Subjects•Toronto Worldwide Fil... From 1928 to 2004, these four were the only real films released at festivals that then plastic box the very best Oscar. Everything has transformed. Throughout yesteryear six years, five best picture those who win have bowed at festivals typically, these were relatively low-budget productions initially regarded as niche pictures. Ultimately, basically one grew to become large hits. COVER STORY: David Cronenberg how the $20 Million 'Dangerous Method' Got Made The very first was Paul Haggis' Crash, that was unknown if this opened at Toronto in 2005. The Departed triumphed the following year in a commercial sense and also at the Academy awards despite eschewing festivals, however it was then No Country for Old Males (Cannes), Slumdog Uniform (Telluride), The Hurt Locker (Venice) and also the King's Speech (Telluride), all underdog those who win. No surprise, then, that Hollywood's radar screens are trained on Toronto. Although probably the most eagerly looked forward to films happen to be seen at Venice or Telluride -- Alexander Payne's The Descendants, David Cronenberg's A Harmful Method, Roman Polanski's Carnage -- it had been The King's Speech's screening at this past year's festival that caught the attention of press and industry figures, not its Telluride premiere. The Social Networking had its world premiere in the New You are able to Film Festival a few days later, and also the two films duked it for the following five several weeks until Speech won in the Kodak Theatre. What exactly unknown amounts are experts thinking of getting in Toronto this season? One of the galas, Bennett Burns's baseball drama Moneyball, starring Kaira Pitt, has obvious appeal -- but there's no advance word onto it, along with a uneven production history brings about qualms. Also eagerly anticipated are Sarah Polley's Take This Waltz Bruce Beresford's Peace, Love, & Misunderstanding, starring Jane Fonda and Catherine Keener Darrell Roodt's Winnie, with Jennifer Hudson as Nelson Mandela's (Terrence Howard) questionable wife another Africa-set drama, Marc Forster's Machine Gun Preacher, starring Gerard Butler and Michelle Monaghan and Luc Besson's Burma-set drama The Woman, featuring Michelle Yeoh. Within the Special Presentations section are Jonathan Levine's already-over-blown dramedy 50/50 Oren Moverman's Rampart Michael Winterbottom's Trishna, with Freida Pinto starring within an adaptation of Thomas Sturdy's novel Tess from the D'Urbervilles occur India and, for buffs, Guy Maddin's Keyhole, starring Isabella Rossellini. The Brand New You are able to Film Festival, which opens Sept. 30, will again have one world premiere that's garnering much speculation: My Week With Marilyn, by which Michelle Williams and Kenneth Branagh appear as Lana Turner and Laurence Olivier. Other releases for that relaxation of the season will open directly in theaters without major festival exposure. What triggered the sudden change from more clearly mainstream fare winning all of the Academy awards to specialized films taking their place? A variety of explanations could be suggested, however the answer is based on a mix of a number of them: galleries are no more within the prestige pictures business, a gradual change within the makeup and sensibilities of Academy people, the growing sophistication of selling and publicity campaigns, Dvd disks of more compact films engaging in the hands of voters, and also the shrewd utilization of festivals like a starting pad. Since 1977, when Annie Hall beat The Exorcist inside a fight rather similar to those of 2 yrs ago when Hurt Locker won over Avatar, the number of Oscar those who win are there that may, within this era, be looked at festival-type films? Nonetheless, it's perplexing the British Patient wasn't proven at any festivals -- it appears an all natural. And, given Clint Eastwood's longtime presence at major festivals, it could have been simple to imagine Billion Dollar Baby working the circuit, however it barely designed a December 2004 release over time. Enjoy it, Eastwood's J. Edgar is missing festivals and heading straight for movie theaters toward the finish of the season.
