Robopocalypse Gets A Release Date
Spielberg's 'bot buster lands in 2013As excited as moviegoers should be about War Horse and Tintin, the prospect of Steven Spielberg's next project, sci-fi actioner Robopocalypse, should already have you breaking out your best robot dance. As of today, it's got a worldwide release date - July 3, 2013 - the first day of the Independence Day holiday in the US. Yup, this is the place blockbusters go to blow ginormous things up. Even Spielberg's Belgian boy wonder may have to bow before the global maelstrom the director is likely to unleash on us in his next project. Funding his adaptation of Daniel H. Wilson's page-turner are 20th Century Fox and the Spielberg-founded DreamWorks Pictures. Says Spielberg in a joint announcement by the two studios: "I am so pleased that (20th Century Fox joint-CEOs) Tom Rothman and Jim Gianopulos see the same exciting opportunities in Robopocalypse that we originally saw when we bought the rights to the book. We had a successful relationship with them and Fox when we made Minority Report and we hope we can deliver another film that will give today's global audiences something thrilling. " . Like Robot Wars infected by the Y2K virus, Robopocalypse sees mankind's reliance on automation rebound horrifically when robots become self-aware and rise up against their owners. It's big, bad and bloody, and if there's a story more tailor-made for Spielberg's touch than this, we've not read it. Watch X-Men: First Class
